FAQs

Below are some frequently asked questions regarding Hampton Behavioral Health Center. If you require additional information or have questions not addressed here, please contact us, and our staff will be happy to assist you.

Anyone can make a referral to Hampton. Referrals are often made by health care professionals (physicians, social workers, psychologists), by a hospital emergency room or crisis center, or by a community agency or mental health program. Referrals may also be made by family members, friends, clergy or the individual in need of service.

Patients and families absolutely have a choice as to where they can receive services. Hampton’s specialized programs are different from what you are likely to find on a general hospital unit (i.e. separate units for adolescents, adults, dual-diagnosis and geriatric patients). Patients and families can specifically request Hampton. Families can even call Hampton’s Access Center to check on bed availability. Because we are in-network with almost all insurances, admission to Hampton Behavioral Health Center is usually very easy.

The Access Center assessment is provided at no charge. A specially-trained counselor will meet with you (and your family, if appropriate), to help determine the appropriate level of care necessary.

Appointments for assessments are not necessary, but for your convenience, it is recommended. Because our Access Center is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, an appointment can usually be scheduled that same day or at any other time convenient for you. Appointments may be made by calling 609-518-2100.

Hampton accepts almost all major insurances, including Aetna, Magellan, Blue Cross, Cigna, United Health Care, Oxford, TRICARE®, CHAMPUS and Medicare. Due to federal regulations, Hampton Behavioral Health Center is unable to accept Medicaid for adult patients between the ages of 21 and 64 years of age. If you are uncertain as to whether or not Hampton Behavioral Health Center is in the network with your insurance company, please call us at 609-518-2100. It is Hampton’s policy not to create a financial hardship for any patient. If necessary a payment plan appropriate to each patient’s financial status will be established. For more information, please visit our Insurance Information page.

Depending on your insurance plan, you may need prior authorization before admission. The staff of Hampton’s Access Center will be happy to process any pre-authorization requirements with your insurance company.

You should plan to bring only three changes of comfortable, casual clothing (wash and wear). You will also need appropriate slip-on footwear and overnight personal care items, such as a toothbrush and shampoo. Please leave any items of value at home for safekeeping. This would include jewelry, handheld gaming devices (Nintendo DS, Playstation PSP, etc.), MP3 players, personal computer and cell phones. You do not need to bring items such as razors; these will be provided on the unit. Patients are also asked to leave personal bed linens (i.e. pillows and comforters) and stuffed animals at home.

Hampton Behavioral Health Center supports a smoke-free environment and encourages all patients to take advantage of the smoking cessation information available. For those adults who choose to smoke, clients are escorted outside to the Serenity Garden for regular smoke breaks. Under no circumstances are adolescent patients permitted to smoke.

Each unit has its own designated visiting hours. There are also guidelines regarding who may visit on a unit (e.g. small children are not permitted). Patients and family members should check with the Access Center staff and the unit staff for current visiting hours and related information, or visit our visitation information page.
